Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer spoke to Duong Giap because of his experience in Phú Quốc Island, known for its pearl farms. Having enjoyed his time there, he decided to create Vietnamese Woman with Pearl Earring. His subject is adorned in khăn vấn – traditional headwear worn by the Vietnamese people. Drawing upon the pearl’s myriad symbolisms (wisdom, purity, generosity and integrity), this artwork is the artist’s tribute to Vietnamese women.
