strange loop by Jewell Dalina
strange loop by Jewell Dalina
strange loop is a work by Jewell Dalina informed by the concept of self-reference described by Douglas Hofstadter, who considers the self not as a stable identity but as something that forms through repeated acts of awareness, and perception continually turning back onto itself.
The veil suggests a boundary that is never fully solid, echoing the idea that consciousness is built through layers of reflection rather than a singular, fixed core. Each act of perception or feeling generates another version of the self that exists alongside the previous one, presenting identity as something continuously shaped by the act of observing oneself.
The original artwork is created using soft pastels on paper.

About The Artist
About The Artist
Formally trained in the culinary arts and a chef for 7 years before her transition into fine art, Jewell Dalina is a Filipino-Singaporean artist who paints her interpretations of the themes of "agápi and thlípsi". From the varying forms of love in ancient Greece, agápē is the highest of all: the divine love of gods for humans, and the unconditional love of a mother for her child.
Nevertheless, even in this divinity, a shadow of grief (thlípsi) pronounces itself from sacrifice. To love is to grieve, and what else could this be if not a testament to the depth of our connections and what makes us human?
Represented by Mr Lim’s Shop of Visual Treasures (Singapore), Jewell has exhibited in Singapore, Japan, America, and Taiwan.
