Yoss employs wordplay in titling Sa-Jarah. Formed by the words sejarah (history) and jarah (loot), this ballpoint-pen-and-watercolor artwork is a commentary on colonisation. By referencing coloniser behaviour of pillaging conquered territories and using loot to erect monuments to themselves, the artist pokes fun at them by dressing up a Western canon icon in Malaysian clothes.

About the Artist

Yoss Yoseff is a self-taught artist based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He graduated with a degree in Fashion Design in 2018, and is currently pursuing his Masters in Design Technology. As an active participant in the arts community, Yoss has been involved in exhibitions within the past few years.

As a figurative artist, portraits and figures have always been his favourite subjects. Finding his voice and identity as an artist had been difficult, and took him many years until 6 years ago when he finally realised his love for ballpoint pen as a medium. Working has brought him into contact with a wealth of outlooks on the world, and introduced him to a vast range of truly differing perceptions and acceptance, ideas and knowledge. Being able to take part in these local and global exchanges have profoundly affected the works that he makes, driving him to create art that hopefully touches people everywhere one day.
