The artist reinterprets the work of surrealists René Magritte and Man Ray, having been drawn to the fantasy-like quality, playfulness, and enigmatic charm of their art.

In this piece, the artist weaves together themes of artifice and empowerment, drawing parallels between Man Ray's metaphorical "Glass Tears" and drag artistry. Where the tear-streaked face of the woman in Man Ray's work evokes distress, the contrast of this can be said for the art of drag, where made-up characters entertain and empower in a positive and liberating manner. Brigiding, the drag queen pictured, adorned with shimmering face gems, personifies the glamorous side of drag—where everything shiny and embellished is embraced as a part of self-expression.

Clouds, a recurring theme in Magritte's work, envelop the scene and symbolise a newfound sense of freedom—a wider view on gender expression and unbridled self-discovery. They serve as a metaphorical canvas, where the artist explores the boundaries of identity and the limitless possibilities of self-expression.

A heart, subtly placed as a nod to the saying "Everybody say love", a quote from RuPaul's Drag Race Philippines, an internationally-known drag competition where Brigiding competed. This is a nod to the inclusive spirit of the drag community, embracing love and acceptance.

About the Artist

Ennuh Tiu, a Filipina conceptual, fashion, and portrait photographer, began her artistic journey with analog photography, which has now become the core visual language of her work—often using a play of colours to exude that analog charm. Through a diaristic and stream of consciousness approach, she explores themes of self-discovery, identity, and personal relationships. She also delves into documenting the mundane in an attempt to transform it into captivating narratives; inviting viewers into a realm of visual introspection.
