Ken You See That I'm Crying (Deep Inside) by Eberta Sulistyaningrum
Ken You See That I'm Crying (Deep Inside) by Eberta Sulistyaningrum
Taking inspiration from Lichtenstein's piece In the Car, this artwork is a twist on the melodramatic tales of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes (the 13th century first King and Queen of the Singhasari Kingdom in Java, Indonesia). While the traditional story tells of love and romance, it is in fact a tragic tale of impending doom. Ken Arok is holding a type of Indonesian sword called Keris—a symbol of affluence and status, much like the car in the original Lichtenstein work. The “movement” lines are present to signify a move towards the unknown, as nothing lasts forever; no ancient nor modern love story can escape the hands of time and death.
