Festoon of the East by Nat Kunyapat
Festoon of the East by Nat Kunyapat
This reinterpretation offers a fresh perspective on Jan Davidsz de Heem's iconic work, Festoon of Fruit & Flowers, seen through the eyes of a South East Asian individual. This region is known for its abundant variety of fruits and flowers, each bursting with vibrant colours and forms. The spectrum of shapes and vivid hues appear boundless—from a juicy watermelon, a ruby-red pomegranate, glossy pink rose apples, fragrant jasmine, and the delicate chrysanthemum holding deep cultural meanings. The colours and scents attract insects to feast on and pollinate the festoon. Butterflies flutter around, showing off wings decorated with Chinese fans, Thai bamboo fans, and Phi Ta Khon (Ghost Festival) masks, representing the different cultures in South East Asia. Along with local insects; the beetle, dragonfly, caterpillar and ants.
