This work gives a modern twist to two antagonists from Journey to the West: the Spider Demon (Zhizhujing, 蜘蛛精) and the White Bone Demon (Baigujing, 白骨精), who disguise themselves as damsels in distress to deceive and capture travellers. Here, they are depicted in modern, fashionable clothing but their terrifying appearances reveal their true nature. The title Fatal Gyaru references the Japanese Gyaru fashion subculture, known for its bold and exaggerated style.

Despite its Chinese origin, Journey to the West has influenced Indonesian culture through literature, theatre, and television, with traditional arts like Wayang Kulit incorporating its characters and themes.

About the Artist

Yoel Kristiandi is a Jakarta-based visual artist. He began his career as a graphic designer at a design studio that specializes in building brand identities for lifestyle products. Now, as a freelance illustrator, he uses illustration as a medium of art and self-expression, and has created his own merchandise brand, Daylight Parking. His work is inspired by local Indonesian anecdotes, jokes, and nostalgia, blended with various graphic elements from 80s-00s cartoons and Indonesian-Chinese culture.
