Inspired by Journey to the West, the artist portrays the Red Boy (Anghaiji, 紅孩兒) summoning dream demons to form a motorbike gang set to cause chaos. In Wu Cheng'en’s famous novel, the Red Boy is a mischievous demon who controls fire. Here, the Red Boy is depicted as androgynous, which may allude to their journey of transformation and redemption.

Despite its Chinese origin, Journey to the West has influenced Indonesian culture through literature, theatre, and television, with traditional arts like Wayang Kulit incorporating its characters and themes.

About the Artist

Yoel Kristiandi is a Jakarta-based visual artist. He began his career as a graphic designer at a design studio that specializes in building brand identities for lifestyle products. Now, as a freelance illustrator, he uses illustration as a medium of art and self-expression, and has created his own merchandise brand, Daylight Parking. His work is inspired by local Indonesian anecdotes, jokes, and nostalgia, blended with various graphic elements from 80s-00s cartoons and Indonesian-Chinese culture.
